Study Site: Hambone Lake, Northwest Territories
Purpose: Two peat cores were collected, in July of 2016, near Hambone Lake within the Tundra Mine property ~240km northeast of the City of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada in order to (1) analyze and quantify the temporal relationship between change in the concentration of elements of concern (EOC), specifically arsenic, and testate amoebae assemblage variability, and (2) assess the potential of using testate amoebae as a reliable and cost-effective bioindicator of legacy mine contamination.
Abstract: In July 2016, a small boat was used to access the sampling site near Hambone Lake where peat cores (n=2) were collected. Subsamples from both peat cores will undergo multi-proxy analyses, including geochemical (ICP-MS), loss on ignition (LOI), chronological analyses (14C and 210PB), and micropaleontological analyses (testate amoebae). Multivariate statistics will be performed on the generated data sets in order to quantify and examine the temporal response of testate amoebae to changes in the concentration of the EOC over time. This will aid in determining the reliability of utilizing testate amoebae as a bioindicators for legacy mine contamination.
