Guiding principles

To deliver the greatest benefit and value to users, the Can-Peat Metadata Repository is guided by FAIR and CARE principles.

FAIR principles for scientific data management and stewardship provide guidance for making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

CARE principles for Indigenous Data Governance complement the FAIR principles and other movements towards Open Data. They support Indigenous Peoples' rights and interests by recognizing that data should be designed in accordance with the following principles: Collective benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics.

FAIR and CARE principles informed the development of the technology behind the repository. They also clarify issues of data ownership, licensing, and control over data in the platform.
The Can-Peat Metadata Repository is an initiative of the project, Can-Peat: Canada's peatlands as nature-based climate solutions.
